A great interest of mine is the guitarist Emilio Pujol, who was a student of Tarrega and became one of the leading performers, pedagogues, scholars and editors of the 20th century. One of my current projects is researching the works either dedicated to or premiered by Pujol. Nearly all the works are of a high standard, and some are particularly interesting and different (notably Grau’s Fable and the works by Smith Brindle). A couple are in my opinion extraordinary: Broqua’s Evocaciones Criollas and Tres Cantos del Uruguay. Yet all these works are seldom performed — which is not helped by the fact that many are still in copyright but out of print!
I’ve listed everything I can find out about each work. Hopefully this will be a useful resource for others. Any corrections, further details, questions etc. are very much welcome.
Unconfirmed
These works may have been written for Pujol but as yet I haven’t been able to find the scores for all but the Broqua — nor, in some cases, much else out much about them. If anyone knows where/how I can get a copy of any of these scores, or any other relevant details, I would be eternally grateful!
- Camille Eynard – Etude en ut majeur
- Camille Eynard – Carnet de notes (I finally found a score for this one! It confirms that Pujol provided the fingerings, but I still don’t know whether it was written for Pujol, or whether Pujol, or anyone for that matter, premiered the work)
- Alfonso Broqua – Ay, Mi Vida! (I’m not sure if this was an arrangement by Pujol of an already-existing work, or an arrangement by Broqua of an already-existing work, or an entirely new work)
